NICE and the Chief Medical Officer release damning reports on the 'Health' of our children

25/10/2013

Child health has been grabbing the headlines this week with both NICE and the Chief Medical Officer releasing damning reports on the health of our children. The common factors in both reports are that our children are lacking in an active lifestyle and a healthy diet.

The facts are very worrying indeed :

·         3 in 10 children in England aged 2-15 overweight or obese

·         Up to 25% of children deficient in vitamin D

·         An increase in the cases of rickets

·         12.5% of toddlers are obese

·         16% of girls and 17% of boys are obese up to the age of 15

Both reports agree that the best solution to the problem is a lifestyle approach working with families to encourage long-term changes in behavior rather than quick fixes.  Many of the recommendations are exactly what Gugafit already teaches in schools everyday –  healthy eating, being active as a family and reducing screen time. We will watch with interest the response from government and local authorities to these reports and in the meantime we will continue to spread the Gugafit word! #GetUpGetActive
